Deputy Stage Managers
 
The Deputy Stage Managers work through all phases of the production to encourage the best from the cast, always being able to fill in for the Stage Manager when needed. Typically there are two Deputies who divide the duties listed below between them.
 
Auditions

Assists the Stage Manager with the process so that all auditioners are seen
fairly and with a minimum of delay. May be involved in callbacks.
 
Schedule
  • Compiles and maintains a Company Contact Sheet.
  • Coordinate with Director or Costume Designer (when applicable) to implement design and schedule

 

Rehearsals
  • Assists the Stage Manager in his/her duties
  • Sweep and mop the stage as needed before rehearsal
  •  
    Assist the Stage Manager with prompting the cast with lines and blocking, as needed, during off-book rehearsals and points out discrepancies in their performances.
  • Using Call Sheet and working with Director and/or Costume Designer, create make-up and costume plot if not renting costumes
  • Take measurements of cast
  • Label Costume Racks and Store in Dressing Rooms
  • Take inventory of make-up, working with the Director in purchasing supplies
  • Pulls costumes from storage that meet the production
    Purchase, borrow, or arrange for Cast to bring in needed costumes and accessories
  • Manage the unpacking and storage of costumes if rented
  • Record problems or damage of costumes received
  • Maintain inventory of all required costumes
  • Purchase or resupply emergency sewing kit
  • Coordinate with Director and Stage Manager to determine what props are necessary
  • Rent, borrow, buy or build props as necessary to fit within budget
  • Prepare props tables backstage, and work with crew and cast members to make sure that props are in place before rehearsals and replaced properly afterwards
  • Instruct cast in proper handling of delicate items
  • Ensures that incomplete technical work does not jeopardize the safety of the performers, issuing warnings or adjusting rehearsal conditions as needed.
  • Ensures that the cast and run crew are present and quiet during rehearsals.
  • Ensure prop tables are clean and organized before leaving.

 

Technical and Dress Rehearsals
  • Assumes operational control of backstage
  • Coordinates and choreographs all scene changes, assigning actors and backstage crew to positions.
  • Make sure that props are in place before rehearsals and replaced properly afterwards
  • Sets up and puts away, each day, headset equipment.
  •  
    Manage costume fittings for each actor
  • Instruct Actors in storage and repacking of costumes (if rented)
  • Record problems with costumes and make-up, and come up with solutions to issues
  • Maintain costumes and dressing rooms
  • Assist actors in costume and make-up changes, record in Prompt Book
  • Manage any Costume and Make-UP Crew
  • Manage make-up application for each actor
  • Instruct actors in storage application, cleaning and repacking of make-up

 

Performances


  • Coordinates all aspects of the backstage.
  • Sweep and mop backstage, picks-up garbage.
  • Ensures that the cast and run crew are present and quiet during the
    performance.
  • Make sure that props are in place before the show and replaced properly afterwards
  • Controls the flow of the performance by managing scene changes.
  • Coordinate with Stage Manager to determine when actors need to be in places.
  • Ensure backstage is clean and organized before leaving.

    Maintain costumes through the run of the show
  • Ensure that all borrowed or rented costumes are packed and returned, and that AHSTS costumes are stored after the run.
  • Maintain dressing rooms throughout the run of the show
  • Ensure that all make-up is packed and stored after the run
